Lineside Live privacy policy
Last updated 30 October 2026
Lineside Live is a live map of trains on the railway in Great Britain. It is run by Max Garcia, who is responsible for your data under UK data protection law (the UK GDPR). Questions or requests: zapper.peer7v@icloud.com.
In short: there are no accounts, no adverts, no analytics and no tracking, and nothing is sold or shared for marketing.
What stays on your phone
- Your location. If you allow it and press the locate button, the app uses your location to show where you are on the map. It never leaves your phone.
- Your tracked trains, filters and settings. These are stored only on your phone. Deleting the app deletes them.
What our server receives
- Train alerts. If you set an alert ("tell me when a train is due past this place"), the app sends us a push token that Apple gives your phone, together with the place, how much notice you want and any filters (for example freight only). We use these only to send you that alert. They are not linked to your name, email or Apple ID. They are deleted when you delete the alert, or when Apple tells us the token is no longer valid (for example after you delete the app).
- Ordinary web requests. Like any website, our servers see your IP address when the app asks for train positions. Our hosting provider's logs may keep it for up to 30 days, for security and troubleshooting, and it is not used for anything else.
Our legal basis is legitimate interests: running the service you asked for.
Who else is involved
- Apple delivers alert notifications to your phone (Apple Push Notification service).
- Fly.io hosts our servers and database, and Cloudflare hosts the website.
- OpenFreeMap and OpenRailwayMap provide the map images. Your phone loads them directly, so they see your IP address, as any website would.
Some of these providers may process data outside the UK, under the safeguards that UK law requires.
Your rights
You can ask to see, correct or delete the data we hold about you, or object to how we use it. Because there are no accounts, the quickest way to delete your alerts is to remove them in the app, or to delete the app. You can also email us. If you're unhappy with how we handle your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk).
Children
Lineside Live is not aimed at children under 13 and doesn't knowingly collect their data.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted here with a new date.
